The agency is fortunate to have had summer interns for the second year in a row.  Here’s some feedback on the experience from our Summer 2025 interns.

Olivia BranumOlivia Branum

Chemical Engineering Major

Mississippi State University

“This summer, I had the privilege of interning with the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. My time with the Board gave me a behind-the-scenes perspective on the licensure process and the vital role it plays in ensuring public trust, professional accountability, and ethical standards within the engineering and surveying professions. The staff was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, always willing to answer my multitude of questions and share their insights, which made the experience even more meaningful.

My decision to study engineering grew out of a lifelong curiosity for problem-solving and an interest in applying math and science to real-world challenges. As I decided on the chemical engineering discipline and progressed in my coursework, I came to understand that engineering is not only about designing systems or processes, but also about protecting the public and working responsibly for the benefit of society. This internship reaffirmed that belief by showing me how licensure safeguards both the integrity of the profession and the communities we serve.

Looking forward, I plan to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam this fall. Upon my graduation from Mississippi State University in May, I intend to enroll as an Engineer Intern as the next step toward licensure as a Professional Engineer. My long-term career goal is to work in the pharmaceutical or energy industries, where I hope to contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions. I have also been considering pursuing an MBA in the future to complement my engineering background with broader business and leadership skills. I am thankful to the Board for offering me the opportunity to learn and grow this summer, and I will carry the lessons from this experience into the next stages of my academic and professional journey.”

Civil Engineering Major

Mississippi State University

“My internship with the Mississippi Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors was an amazing opportunity. I was able to meet with board members and gain a clear understanding of the steps required to become a licensed engineer in the State of Mississippi. I chose to major in engineering because I was inspired by the impact engineers have on the world and want to contribute to projects that make life safer and better for people.

This internship gave me valuable insight into the professional standards, ethical responsibilities, and licensure process for engineers. My plan after college is to work toward earning my Professional Engineer (PE) license and building a career that makes a positive impact on my community.”
